Should I Use AI to Build My Website?

Blog / Should I Use AI to Build My Website?

Artificial intelligence is changing the way websites are built. With just a few prompts, you can now generate layouts, write content, create images, and even launch a functioning website in a matter of hours.

As the owner of Seven Seas Web Design, I’ve been asked this question more and more over the last year:

A Common Question

“Why should I hire a web designer when AI can build my website for $20 a month?”

The answer isn’t as simple as most people think.

The Short Answer

Yes, AI can build a website.

No, AI cannot reliably build a website that performs at a professional level without human expertise.

A website is much more than pages, images, and text. The businesses that are successful online understand that a website is part of a much larger system that includes user experience, search engine optimization, analytics, conversion tracking, advertising, branding, and ongoing optimization.

Most AI website builders are focused on helping you create a website.

Very few help you create a website that actually grows your business.

What Business Owners Think They’re Getting

Many business owners believe AI can generate a complete, professional website using prompts alone.

The expectation is usually:

  • A beautiful design
  • Fast setup
  • Professional content
  • Search engine visibility
  • Lead generation
  • Marketing integrations
  • Automated growth

In reality, most AI website builders are currently very good at creating the appearance of a professional website.

The challenge begins when that website needs to perform.

What AI-Built Websites Are Often Missing

Over the last year, I’ve reviewed and rebuilt several AI-generated and DIY websites. The same issues tend to appear repeatedly.

Search Engine Optimization

A website can look great and still be nearly invisible on Google.

Professional SEO involves:

  • Keyword research
  • Site architecture
  • Internal linking
  • Schema markup
  • Technical optimization
  • Content strategy
  • Local SEO signals

These elements often require human planning and oversight.

Conversion Optimization

A website’s job isn’t to impress visitors.

Its job is to get visitors to take action.

That might mean:

  • Calling your business
  • Filling out a form
  • Booking an appointment
  • Making a purchase

The placement of buttons, forms, headlines, trust signals, and calls to action all impact conversion rates.

AI can generate a page.

It cannot yet fully understand the psychology of your specific customers.

Tracking and Analytics

This is one of the biggest issues I see.

Recently, I worked with a client who wanted to run advertising campaigns to generate leads.

The landing page looked acceptable at first glance, but there was a major problem.

There was no proper tracking setup.

The website was missing critical components such as:

  • Meta Pixel configuration
  • Google Ads conversion tracking
  • Event tracking
  • User journey monitoring
  • Analytics integrations

Without tracking, you have no way of knowing what’s working and what’s not.

Running ads without tracking is essentially throwing money at Meta or Google and hoping for the best.

Professional marketing requires data.

Without that data, optimization becomes impossible.

User Experience

User experience is often overlooked because it’s difficult to measure by appearance alone.

A website may look attractive but still perform poorly if:

  • Navigation is confusing
  • Mobile usability is weak
  • Load times are slow
  • Forms create friction
  • Information is difficult to find

User experience directly impacts conversions, rankings, and customer trust.

Where AI Excels Today

Despite its limitations, I use AI regularly.

In fact, I believe businesses should embrace AI.

AI is excellent for:

  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Creating outlines
  • Generating first drafts
  • Building wireframes
  • Research assistance
  • Content inspiration
  • Speeding up workflows

Used correctly, AI can dramatically increase productivity.

The mistake happens when people assume AI can replace expertise rather than support it.

Where AI Is Heading

I believe AI development is moving faster than most people realize.

In many ways, AI search has already surpassed traditional search behavior online.

Looking ahead three to five years, I expect AI and AI agents to handle much of the technical work involved in:

  • Website development
  • Content creation
  • SEO implementation
  • Analytics reporting
  • Advertising management
  • Custom functionality

The technology is advancing rapidly.

I fully expect AI to become capable of building far more sophisticated websites than it can today.

Why Human Expertise Will Still Matter

Even as AI becomes more capable, I believe human oversight will remain essential.

Businesses are built around people.

People make emotional decisions.

People have unique needs, expectations, concerns, and behaviors.

The role of the professional will likely evolve from manually building everything to directing, managing, refining, and overseeing AI systems.

Humans will still be responsible for:

  • Business strategy
  • Brand positioning
  • Customer psychology
  • User experience decisions
  • Quality control
  • Relationship building
  • Final approval and oversight

The future is not AI versus humans.

The future is AI working alongside skilled professionals.

My Recommendation

If you’re a startup with a limited budget, an AI website builder may be a reasonable way to get online quickly.

But if your website is expected to generate leads, support advertising campaigns, rank on Google, track customer behavior, and become a true business asset, you will still benefit from professional guidance.

The question is no longer whether AI can build a website.

It can.

The real question is whether that website is built to perform.

Right now, that’s where experience, strategy, and human expertise still make all the difference.
